Grade 6 Farewell Information

Hello Grade 6 Families,

On Thursday, June 25, we are planning to go ahead with the Grade 6 Farewell Ceremony virtually at 2:30. The Google Meet will include messages from the staff as well as video messages from interested students and photos of the students during the school year. Please let us know if you do NOT want your child's photo to be part of the Grade 6 Farewell virtual ceremony.

We will have a yearbook pickup that morning from 9-11 in front of the school. All students will be receiving a yearbook as a keepsake of their time at SVS. Students have had the opportunity to write personalized messages for the yearbook which will be included in their book.

We look forward to seeing you at the Google Meet on June 25!

Hello Parents/Guardians.

Thank-you all for helping your children get set up in Google Classroom.  This has been a step learning curve for everyone.  Now it will be getting used to working virtually and handing in assignments. A couple things to think about when working at home;
1) A week in review will be released every Monday in Google Classroom as an assignment.
2) Up to two lesson will be released per day, we are trying to maintain the Governments decision of 5hours a week.
3) Students will have until the Sunday to compete all assignment given for that week.
4) Find a sport where your child can work successfully within your house.
5) Find time to get away from the screen and do some sort of activity.

Assignments given so far for students
1) Say Hello
2) Journal Prompt
3) Design your Ideal work Space or Show your 'crib'

March 19th

Dear Grade 6 Parents,

Thank you for your patience at this time. This is definitely uncertain times and we are all trying to be safe with our families. Please let your kids know that we have been thinking of them and are missing them!

As of now, all learning materials and non-critical items like shoes will be held at the school until after the break. Please watch for an email or our school website for plans, after the March break.

Please stay safe,

Mr. Spriggs

Dear Grade 6 Parents,

We have had an interesting week fielding questions about the COVID-19 infection from students who have heard rumors or had concerns. We spoke about the importance of handwashing and avoiding touching your face, and worked to dispel some of the myths that often float around in a time like this. When a question was asked that we did not know the answer to, we looked to the Alberta Health Services website for information.

In math we have been looking at how to multiply and divide decimal numbers by powers of ten (10, 100, 1000, etc). The most effective approach to solving questions like these is to move the decimal either to the right to make a larger number (multiplication) or to the left to make a smaller number (division). With each question, we encourage the students to ask themselves, "is the answer I'm looking for going to be greater or less than the number I started with."

We concluded out Ancient Athens unit by completing our fictitious news article about an event in Athens. Students wrote about the Trial of Socrates, a war between Sparta and Athens or and important vote send by the Council of 500 to the Assembly. We also had our Athens unit test of Thursday and marks and corrections will be available next week.

The students have been learning about how to take a personal story that they have and turn it into a narrative written piece. Thinking about the pacing of their stories, the arc (conflict, climax, resolution) and how to add dialogue, helps take a personal experience and turn it into a story.

Have a great weekend!

Mr. Spriggs

This Week in Grade 6

Dear Grade 6A Parents

This week we have been reviewing how to add, subtract and order decimals. We learned how just because a decimal number has more digits compared to another decimal, doesn't necessarily mean that it is a larger number (0.52 > 0.4325). This is often difficult for students to understand and remember because it works differently than whole numbers (52 < 4325). Next week we will be reviewing how to multiply and divide decimal numbers.

We concluded our sky science unit this week with a unit test. The students needed to answer multiple-choice questions similar to what they will see on the PATs, as well as draw diagrams explaining lunar and solar eclipses and the position of the earth in the four seasons of the year. Marks for this test were given to the students on Thursday.

The students have been working on writing a newspaper article connected to what they have learned about Ancient Athens and democracy. Students created the 5Ws and additional facts about a fictitious event, such as an important vote, the trial of Socrates, or a battle with Sparta, that might have been collected by a reporter. Using a newspaper template in Google Docs, the students are adding pictures, headlines and the name of their newspaper.

Have a great weekend!

Mr. Spriggs

Students had the opportunity to participate in a school tour of Sir John A. MacDonald. While touring the school students did a scavenger hunt and learned all about what options they could take. A notice went home about how to register for the options in powerschool for next school year.

In math we have been learning about decimals. Students have been able to take their understanding of fractions and interpret this into a decimal. They will soon be working on adding and subtracting decimals.

In Science we are wrapping up our learning around Sky Science. We will be having a quiz on Wednesday March 4th, their Sky Science sketchnote will be due at this time as well.

In Social we have been writing a news article for an event that happened in Ancient Athens. The events are ranging from a decision made on Pnyx Hill, a trial that happened, or an event that happened in the community. Students will be wrapping up their article this upcoming week.

We will be having a meeting on Tuesday, March 10 for any parents who are interested in having a conversation about what the Grade 6 Farewell is going to look like. We will chat about what we have done in the past.

*Correction* The Sir John A Macdonald Student tour and open house are on Thursday, February 27th, not Wednesday.

Open House - Thursday, February 27, 2020, 5:30pm to 7:00pm

This week we concluded our fraction unit with a look at word problems, writing a fraction as a division statement and finding the fraction of a whole number.  We worked to deepen our understanding of how to find the fractional amount of a whole number by drawing pictures but also learned that a quicker answer can be found by dividing the whole number by the denominator and then multiplying that answer by the numerator of the fraction.  Starting next week, we will be working with decimal numbers.

We continued our work on writing elaborate detail in our stories this week by completing a paragraph about a mysterious sled (object) and someone freezing outside (character).  The students brainstormed descriptive language they could use in their paragraphs and then set the scene for their descriptive piece before beginning to write.  Setting the scene helps put the writing into some context and also helps the students transition from the "action" of their story to the pause with description and then back to the "action".  We will be looking at larger plot development approaches in our writing next week by watching and summarizing Pixar short movies.

Have a great weekend,
Mr. Spriggs

On Monday the students participated in an Artificial Intelligence Workshop hosted by Kids Code.  We learned how computers are being trained and coded to recognize images, human gestures, and facial features.  Like a young child, a computer needs to see a variety of images and examples if it wants to understand and recognize an object in the future. The students played a card game that asked them to identify common everyday object based on it characteristics (colour, shape, size, texture, etc).  After this, we used the website https://teachablemachine.withgoogle.com/ to teach a computer to recognize classroom objects and perform a task (i.e. show the computer a ruler and have it say your name.)

We completed our second newspaper article write this year on Tuesday, as part of our preparations toward the writing PAT in May.  The students were given a collection of facts about the International Space Station and using the knowledge they have gained about how articles are written, to create their own.  As we mark these articles we are looking for a catchy headline, and intro paragraph with the 5Ws, well-organized paragraphs, quotes throughout, and a strong conclusion.  The students will be sharing the progression of their article writing at Parent-Teacher conferences on March 19 & 20.

Have a great weekend!

Week in Review

Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow (Friday, January 30)*

This week we have been completing mini-lessons and practice sessions on writing newspaper articles, focusing on writing catchy headlines, adding quotes, organizing our facts into paragraphs and writing concluding paragraphs. As part of our mid-year assessment, we will be writing a newspaper article on the International Space Station on Monday.

We spent this week in math reviewing techniques and practicing math fluency games.  Working with either dice or playing cards, and in groups of two or three, the students learned games such as "Pig", "Subtraction Salute", "Slam Ten", "To 30".  As math becomes more challenging in Jr High and beyond, have basic math fact fluency becomes even more important, as it will allow students to focus on the question and not on the facts.

The students have been learning about the phases of the moon this week.  Each student created a phases flipbook that they can reference to help them remember the pattern (new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent).

Have a great weekend!

Mr. Spriggs

On Tuesday, students and a teacher from G.P Vanier school visited the grade 6s to talk about the late French immersion program, which is an option for all SVS students next year.  The grade 7 student spoke about how quickly they were able to learn to speak and understand french, and about many of the options and clubs available at their school.  If you are interested in learning more about this program there will be an open house on February 5th (6:30pm to 7:30 pm) at G.P. Vanier School.

We have been looking at how to name, model and convert fractions this week in math.  The students learned that improper fractions (12/5) can be changed to a mixed number fraction (2, 2/5), and how to convert them back.  Next week we will be comparing fractions on a number line and learning how to write equivalent fractions using division and multiplication.

In groups of four, the students started the creation of their Ancient Athens board game.  The students created "character cards" (Citizen, Metic, Slave, Female) and are now working on "travel cards" that will be picked up as the teams move around the game board.  Categories such as chance, physical activity, memorization, consequence, and knowledge, will be randomly chosen to "level up" or "level down" their character.

Have a great week, and enjoy the nice weather!

Jam 17

Dear 6A Parents,

We kicked off our Junior High tour season with a visit to Colonel Irvine.  Forty students from Simons Valley learned about the many clubs and sports teams available to grade 7 students before going on a tour of the building.  The students visited the band room, shop, art rooms, etc, before having lunch in the cafeteria.  The students were interested in knowing more about options, how to open their lockers and why they have to change before gym class.  We will be visited by G.P. Vanier this Wednesday to learn about their late french immersion program, followed by a tour of Sir John A MacDonald on February 27th.

The students did some note-taking on the various classes of people and important places in Ancient Athens this week. Now that we have a basic understanding of how the city worked, we will be creating an Ancient Athens board game starting Monday.

The students created brochures this week on one of the planets in our solar system.  They needed to research the characteristics of their planet (size, distance from the sun, composition) and include images relevant to the planet. This brochure is due to Mr. Spriggs on Tuesday.

Have a great weekend,

Mr. Cull

Dear 6B Parents

Welcome back! From the stories and conversations from students this week it sounds like many families had adventurous or relaxing breaks and all enjoyed the milder weather.

We have been learning about factors and lowest common multiples this week. Factors are whole numbers that are multiplied together to produce another number. For example, the factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12. Lowest common multiples are the lowest quantity that is a multiple of two or more given quantities (e.g. 12 is the lowest common multiple of 2, 3, and 4). We will be reviewing prime and composite numbers next week, as well as order of operations.

We continued our study of democracy this week and will be learning about the birthplace of democracy, Ancient Athens. We reviewed where Athens is located in the world and learned that the concepts of democracy were first conceived over 2500 years ago. In future weeks we will be learning about the different people of Athenian society (citizens, women, children, metics and slaves) and important places to Athenian democracy (Boule, Pynx hill, Agora and law courts).

Have a great weekend,

Mr. Spriggs
