This week in Grade 6

On Monday we worked with two volunteers from the Junior Achievement program.  The students learned about how to complete a business plan by; thinking about profit vs expenses, identifying target markets, designing a product or service that is needed in society and affective ways to advertise your idea.  Playing a game called "Can you Guess the Logo", the students also learned why the most iconic brands don't even need to include the name of the company (i.e. Nike swoosh, MacDonald golden arches).

In preparation for our trip to the Alberta Legislature next Wednesday, the students participated in a Mock Legislative debate.  We sent the classroom up like the Legislature, with the Official Opposition on one side of the aisle and the government on the other, and the Speaker, Clerks, and Mace in the middle.  Debating the topic, "should Alberta students have full access to cell phones in school", the students did a first reading of the bill, proceeded to a debate and the second reading and then onto a third reading and final vote.  We will be participating in another mock debate, using full costumes, on Wednesday in Edmonton.

Ryan Willert has been working at our school painting a mural in our Gathering Space.  The following link is a quick video of his artistic process.https://youtu.be/MF9vXDn_MDk
We are only half way done and we are really looking forward to unveiling the whole mural at the end of November.
Ryan has also been teaching students about the 4 teachings of the buffalo;
  1. Take Responsibility
  2. Say Sorry
  3. Forgive yourself
  4. Forgive others

Thank-you

Have a great weekend,
Mr. Spriggs

Halloween
We will be having a Halloween celebration in the afternoon on Thursday, October 31. Students are allowed to wear costumes in the afternoon that day. Please no masks, weapons, or blood/ gore.
Pack in Pack Out Lunch
Starting this year, we have been attempting to reduce our SVS ecological footprint by moving towards a “Pack In and Pack Out” philosophy. Once a student has eaten their lunch or snack, the packaging of that item will be put back into lunch kits and returned home for recycling/ composting. In continuing to support this positive change, please provide a locking baggie for items such as apple cores, yogurt tubes etc. The baggie will be returned home with the student each day for composting at home and then should be added back into the lunch kit for the next day. Help us make a difference!

Wow! What a short, but very busy week in grade 6. We started the week off working with Calgary rapper Transit22. Each of the four grade 6 classrooms wrote a verse for our Remembrance Day assembly song. 6A focused on D-Day, 6A on Vimy Ridge, and 6C/ 6D on the after-effects of war. On Thursday, the students then recorded the song with Transit in our makeshift recording studio in the DLC. On Monday the students will be recording a music video.

With the Federal election just around the corner, the students researched this week the four major political parties (Liberals, Conservatives, Green and NDP) and then shared what they learned with the teachers and grade 4 and 5 students on Thursday. All division two students then voted in the Student Vote this morning. Results of the Student Vote across Canada will be released along with the Federal election results on Tuesday.

This morning we met with The Honorable Minister of Seniors and Housing - Josephine Pon. Minister Pon was elected to the Alberta Legislature last April as the MLA of the Calgary - Beddington area. She spoke about her responsibility to represent the people of Sandstone, MacEwan, and surrounding communities. She explained what she does as a member of the Premiers Cabinet and how she helps to create legislation to support senior citizens and people looking for affordable housing in the province.

Have a Great Weekend!

SVS Pumpkinella!

Get your family together and join in the fun for SVS's Pumpkinella! Design, carve or dress up a pumpkin to bring for display.

ONLY ONE DISPLAY PER FAMILY!

Bring your pumpkin to the DLC after school on Thursday October 30th or the morning of Friday October 31st from 8:20-8:40am.

The pumpkin may have a safer journey if they are not brought to school on the bus. If you could add a tea-light to the center of your pumpkin, it will add to a special effect when placed in the gym.

Classes will tour the gym throughout the day to enjoy your efforts. Pumpkins MUST be picked up to go home by Friday between 1:30 and 2:30pm.

Any pumpkins left at school will be composted.

Oct 11th

Yesterday we had the privilege of learning from our Artist in Residence and Blackfoot elder Ryan Jason Aleen Willert. He spoke to the 6s about the importance of tobacco and the pipe for Blackfoot people, the significance of the law of the four colours and living like a Buffalo. The students learned that living like a Buffalo means, admitting when you have made a mistake, apologizing, even if it is hard to do, forgiving yourself for your errors and forgiving others when they have wronged you. As Mr. Willert moves into painting the mural that will be displayed in the Multi-Purpose Room, we will be working with him again.

In preparation for our work with Calgary Rapper Transit22 next week, the students have been researching the battle at Vimy Ridge and the D-Day invasion. These two heroic sacrifices from Canadian soldiers will make up two of the verses in the song we will start to write next week. Once the song is complete, we will be recording a music video that will be shared at the Remembrance Day assembly on November 7th (10:30am to 11:30am).

We have been looking at how continuous and discrete data can be interpreted visually using either a bar graph or a broken line graph. The students learned that by continuing the line in the broken line graph you can predict future information trends (i.e. what will the weather be next week based on the trend of this week.)

Have a great long weekend!

Mr. Spriggs

This week in Grade 6

Simons Valley School is pleased to announce that Ryan Jason Allen Willert will be working with the staff and students in the role of Artist in Residence starting this upcoming week. Ryan is a full-time artist and storyteller born and raised in Southern Alberta. Although he was brought up in a non-native community, he has since reconnected with his Blackfoot roots (Siksika Nation). Ryan learned the art of black ink drawing from his father Richard (Dicky) Stimson, another well-known Siksika Nation artist. Among the many exhibitions where he has presented his work are the City of Calgary and Calgary’s Glenbow Museum. Ryan will be sharing the Buffalo teachings with our staff and students and in turn creating a mural in our multipurpose area.
Please come hear him speak at the Parent Council meeting Thursday October 10th at 7pm.
