This week in Grade 6

  On Monday we worked with two volunteers from the Junior Achievement program.  The students learned about how to complete a business plan by; thinking about profit vs expenses, identifying target markets, designing a product or service that is needed in society and affective ways to advertise your idea.  Playing a game called "Can you Guess the Logo", the students also learned why the most iconic brands don't even need to include the name of the company (i.e. Nike swoosh, MacDonald golden arches).

      In preparation for our trip to the Alberta Legislature next Wednesday, the students participated in a Mock Legislative debate.  We sent the classroom up like the Legislature, with the Official Opposition on one side of the aisle and the government on the other, and the Speaker, Clerks, and Mace in the middle.  Debating the topic, "should Alberta students have full access to cell phones in school", the students did a first reading of the bill, proceeded to a debate and the second reading and then onto a third reading and final vote.  We will be participating in another mock debate, using full costumes, on Wednesday in Edmonton.

Ryan Willert has been working at our school painting a mural in our Gathering Space.  The following link is a quick video of his artistic process.https://youtu.be/MF9vXDn_MDk
We are only half way done and we are really looking forward to unveiling the whole mural at the end of November.
Ryan has also been teaching students about the 4 teachings of the buffalo;
  1. Take Responsibility
  2. Say Sorry
  3. Forgive yourself
  4. Forgive others

Thank-you

Have a great weekend,
Mr. Spriggs

Halloween
We will be having a Halloween celebration in the afternoon on Thursday, October 31. Students are allowed to wear costumes in the afternoon that day. Please no masks, weapons, or blood/ gore.
Pack in Pack Out Lunch
Starting this year, we have been attempting to reduce our SVS ecological footprint by moving towards a “Pack In and Pack Out” philosophy. Once a student has eaten their lunch or snack, the packaging of that item will be put back into lunch kits and returned home for recycling/ composting. In continuing to support this positive change, please provide a locking baggie for items such as apple cores, yogurt tubes etc. The baggie will be returned home with the student each day for composting at home and then should be added back into the lunch kit for the next day. Help us make a difference!
